Hello From Winter Wonderland!

There is already a good amount of snow on the ground in Julian and more is supposed to fall Thursday night. We’ve got a three day weekend coming up and mostly clear skies forecast for it, making it a perfect time to come see Winter in action in San Diego County. We have two live music shows this weekend and we will be opening for lunch on Thursday this week at 11:30 am – stop in or phone in an order for pick up. The Bailey Barbecue will also be open all day on Monday the 20th for Presidents Day. Read on for all of the details.

This Weekend

Since there is so much snow on the ground, we decided to open up early on Thursday and serve lunch. We’ll have a full menu of sandwiches, salads, barbecue plates and delicious chicken pot pies. Our popular Wings and Sticks – smoked chicken wings and full drumsticks tossed in our spicy house wing sauce – will be on the menu for both Thursday and Friday, and hopefully Monday as well. We’ll open at 11:30 am and serve food until 8 pm on Thursday, with the saloon serving drinks until 10 pm. Look for mulled cider on the menu – it is also great with a little spiced rum in it. All draft beers and cocktails are $1 off from 4 pm to Close every Thursday night.

Friday the 17th we will be open normal hours in the kitchen, 11:30 am to 8 pm, but the saloon will be open until midnight due to the live music show with the High Plains Drifters. The band plays every week down at the Kraken in Cardiff. The group is full of talented musicians that sound great. Look for lots of classic rock with a little bit of classic country thrown into the mix. Its great music for a good time and easy to dance to. The band will kick off at 8 pm and play until midnight.

Saturday night we will host the Sofa Kings featuring local guitar hero Harry Joe Reynolds. Harry is a great guitar player and also has a fine singing voice. They’ll start the show at 8 pm and again go until midnight. Two great nights of live music, dancing and good times.

Sunday we’ll be open 11:30 am to 8:30 pm and on Presidents Day, Monday the 20th, we’ll be open 11:30 am to 8 pm. On Monday from 4-8 pm we will be doing our great pitcher special – just $13 for any of our 16 great draft beers. If the wings are around, I will post it up on our Facebook page. If you are not already a fan, click to like us and follow our regular updates at www.facebook.com/baileybbq.

More Music

I am really excited about the next few months of music. We have a ton of great bands booked and we are adding more Friday shows all the time. Next weekend we welcome the Phil Diiorio Band back to Baileys. Phil is a great guitarist and he plays lots of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and other classic rock and blues.

The following weekend, we will have our second Open Mic Night hosted by Bill Everett on Friday, March 2nd. The last one went great and we are looking to do more Open Mic nights throughout the year. Bring your instrument and sign up to play. Bill will be setting up his PA system for the night. And if you don’t play, come out to support the great musical talent we have up here. There is no cover for the Open Mic night.

The very next night is a band I am super excited about, Rushed – an evening of Rush on Saturday, March 3rd. This San Diego based power trio will play all of the early hits from the great Canadian power trio. This is the first time the band has played up here and I can’t wait to see them. The drummer is also in a Steve Miller tribute band called Wild Mountain Honey that you can look forward to seeing some time this summer at the Bailey.

Looking further ahead, the G String Daddies will bring their brand of blues and rock to the Bailey Saloon for the first time on Saturday, March 10th. We will have a free show featuring Highway 79 on Friday, March 16th. Left Hand Thread will be entertaining us for our big St. Patrick’s Day party on Saturday, March 17th. We’ll have Guinness on tap, beer from Julian Brewing Company, Irish Car Bombs and great corned beef on special.

The Smart Brothers return to Julian on March 31st and make your reservations to stay up in Julian for the return of Derailed on Saturday, June 30th. To find even more band listings, check out our website at www.baileybbq.com. You can also find our current tap list on there along with links on places to stay in the Julian area.

Last Bites

Julian Brewing Company is almost ready to go. We hopefully will be getting the last of our parts in this week and be ready to brew sometime over the weekend. The first brew may need to wait until next week with a busy holiday weekend expected, but we should be able to release our first beer in early March. I will certainly be posting updates on the Facebook page. Local woodsmith Don Madison is working on custom tap handles for us. And the brewery will be participating in the Taste of Julian on April 14th.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to support our benefit show last week with 50 Cal, Natural Selection and Outta Line. We raised $1200 for the family of Jose Cruz – it was great to see so many people support the family. 50 Cal will be coming back for some all ages shows in the Summer. And Outta Line is working on putting together some full sets of AC/DC covers and Judas Priest covers. We will be bringing them back soon.

We have free Wi-Fi in the restaurant and saloon for Bailey Barbecue customers. And as always, there is parking right behind the restaurant in our lot just off A Street. If you have enjoyed your time at the Bailey Barbecue, please consider writing a short review online at either www.yelp.com or www.tripadvisor.com. It would be greatly appreciated.

If you ever want to figure out what the weather is like up here, which is hard, this is a good link: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=92036. You can check weather stations all over the greater Julian area – the weather varies greatly with changes in elevation. In addition to being good for current weather conditions, it has a pretty reliable forecast that goes up to 10 days.

That is your good barbecue and brew news from Julian. Comments, suggestions and constructive criticism are always welcome – just reply to this email. If you ever want to be removed from our list, just reply back with the word unsubscribe in the body of the email. We’ll see you up here soon for a fun snow day. Cheers, Tom

Hope to see you there, Bill Everett, plus:

This weekend for Superbowl Sunday we will be featuring $13 pitchers of draft beer during the game from 3 pm until 9 pm. The San Diego Union-Tribune named the Bailey Barbecue as one of the top beer destinations to watch the Super Bowl at. I will say that we have to be the best place in San Diego county above 4200 feet at which to watch the big game. Here is the link to the write up: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/feb/01/peters-picks-top-beer-bars-for-super-bowl/. Come watch the game on our big screen TV with your friends and enjoy great food and beer.

We are hoping to have our smoked chicken wings available during the game as well, but I won’t know for sure until Sunday. I will certainly post up on our Facebook page on Sunday whether or not we are going to have them. You can check it out at www.facebook.com/baileybbq.

And speaking of the internet, we have updated our web site at www.baileybbq.com with a new tap list that shows what we are currently pouring, an expanded list of upcoming bands and a page for local links including places to stay in the Julian area.

We have a special benefit show coming up that is not on the music schedule on Friday, February 10th for the family of Jose Cruz. Jose worked for us during Apple Days and he unexpectedly passed away in January. He leaves behind a wife and three daughters. We are going to have a triple bill of local bands – 50 Cal, Natural Selection and Outta Line play on the 10th starting at 7 pm and 100% of the $5 cover charge will be given to the family. We will also be donating $1 from every drink served at the bar Friday night to his family as well. Here is the timing of the bands:

7 pm – 50 Cal – All Ages from 7 pm to 8 pm.
8 pm – Natural Selection
10 pm – Outta Line

Please come out and enjoy some great music and help us raise money for Jose’s family. If you can’t make it by, we’ll have a tip jar at the bar all weekend long that we will donate to the family. Natural Selection will be doing a full show on Saturday the 11th.

We will be open all day on Monday, February 20th for President’s Day. We will have TWO live shows that weekend with the High Plains Drifters on Friday the 17th and The Sofa Kings featuring Harry Joe Reynolds on the 18th. I am hoping that we will be able to release our first beer from Julian Brewing Company by the end of the month. The first Friday in March we will host another open Mic night. And make plans to join us for St. Patrick’s Day with Corned Beef and Cabbage, Guinness on Draft and tunes from Left Hand Thread. Hope to see you at the Bailey soon.

Cheers, Tom

Hello Beer and Barbecue Fans!

It sure hasn’t felt much like winter up in the mountains lately. The weather will be cooling back down a little this weekend but the sunshine is supposed to continue. We have some great bands booked over the next few months already including a great show from The Fremonts this Saturday. I have an update on our hours for the upcoming holiday weekend along with some food specials and new beers on tap.

Bands

This Saturday at 8 pm we will welcome back The Fremonts, a great blues band that plays gulf coast R & B that makes you want to get up and dance. You can check them out online at: www.thefremonts.com. The band’s second album won Blues Album of the Year in 2006 at the San Diego Music Awards. Next weekend we will host local guitar hero Roy Wathen and the Wathenclan Band on the 21st. The band features local character Sponge Bob on bass. And rounding out the month of January is the Pescadero Pickers, who play self described Hillbilly Blues.

February will be a full month of music with 2 Friday shows already booked. We’ll start the month with Wild Night on Saturday the 4th. For Valentines Day weekend we’ll have free show with local troubadours Highway 79 on Friday the 10th at 8 pm. Saturday the 11th we have local rockers Natural Selection at 8 pm. Over President’s day weekend High Plains Drifters will play on Friday the 17th and the Sofa Kings with Harry Joe Reynolds will entertain us on the 18th, both shows at 8 pm. We will be open all day, Monday the 20th for the Presidents Day holiday. Our $5 cover for the music shows goes directly to the band.

Looking further ahead, there will be an Open Mic night on Friday, March 2nd and the Smart Brothers return to Julian on Saturday March 31st. We are gearing up for our big St. Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday the 17th. We will have Guinness Stout on tap, Beer Boiled Corned Beef, lots of Jameson, a great 12 year old Irish Single Malt Whiskey and hopefully some great house brewed beer!

Saloon and Brewery News

We have a lot of great beer on tap right now, but that is becoming pretty standard. From Alpine we have Nelson IPA, a rye IPA made with very aromatic New Zealand hops that give the beer an almost tropical fruit note. When the Nelson is gone, look for Alpine’s flagship double IPA Pure Hoppiness to be on tap. Blind Pig IPA is still flowing – a very drinkable 6.2% IPA with plenty of hop flavor. Our dark beer right now is Airdale Dark and Stormy Imperial Stout. It is a big 9% alcohol stout. Airdale is owned by a former Navy helicopter pilot who lives in San Diego. And our Belgian-style beer tap is occupied by Sierra Nevada Ovila Quad, a big, malty brown ale that is a collaboration with monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Northern California.

The bar list continues to expand. We just got in Revel Spiced Whiskey. It goes great with the raw Julian cider to make what we call a Whiskey Jack. The raw cider also blends well with spiced rum and cinnamon vodka. Carri is serving up traditional Lemon Drop shots in the bar where you suck on a slice of lemon. And the cooler weather makes it the perfect time to enjoy our house shot, the Snowshoe. It is a warming mix of Rumple Minze and Wild Turkey 101.

Our 3 barrel brewing system will be arriving today, Friday the 13th. We have cleared out the Bailey House garage and should be making beer by the end of the month with a first beer released by the end of February. The first brew will be a Pale Ale-style beer brewed with all local hops grown in Santa Ysabel at Star B Ranch. It will be the first time in over 120 years that there will be an operational brewery in Julian. Look for something dark, likely a well hopped stout, as beer number 2. I also have a nice selection of New Zealand grown hops that I will be using very soon.

Hours and Grub

We will be open all day on Monday, January 16th for Martin Luther King day from 11:30 am to 8 pm. We’ll do our great $13 pitcher special on any of the draft beers from 4 until close. This Monday will be our last regular Monday open for a while. We will be open on all Monday holidays, but our normal hours will now revert to Thursday through Sunday for the rest of the winter. We will be looking to expand the hours as we get past the time change and the weather gets warmer.

On Thursday and Friday we are now offering great tacos in addition to our smoked chicken wings. Get two tasty tacos for just $6 with a rotating selection of meats including pulled pork, chicken and skirt steak. The kitchen tops them with onion, cilantro and an avocado sauce. We are also going to start opening at 4 pm on Thursdays instead of 5 pm from now on. Every Thursday night we offer $1 off all draft beers and cocktails, so a great draft beer is just $4 all night.

This weekend, look for a Smoked Pork Loin Medallion special from the kitchen on Saturday night and we’ll have Loaded Potato Soup topped with cheese, green onion and bacon. We’ll have two types of coleslaw from Lindsey this weekend – our house Julian Slaw, which is cider based and has apples, and a new Creamy Coleslaw which is more traditional. Both are delicious so you can pick your favorite. We are now serving hot dogs and french fries as a kids special.

If you need a place to stay, and there are lots of great places to stay around Julian, visit the Chamber of Commerce page at: http://www.julianca.com/. If you want to check out something cool in town visit The Old Well, a record and vintage clothing store on B Street one block off Main Street. It still has the original stone well for Julian inside the building that is very impressive. And the store has a real nice selection of vinyl records.

We are updating our website at www.baileybbq.com. We’ll have new pages and new content including a tap list over the next few weeks. You can get daily updates on what is happening on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/baileybbq. You can always phone in an order to-go at 760-765-3757. Both the restaurant and the saloon have free wi-fi. And we have free parking for Bailey customers in the parking lot behind the restaurant off A Street.

Thanks for all of the support in 2011. I hope to see you soon up in the mountains. Cheers, Tom

We have a great weekend for you at Bailey Barbecue coming up. The fall
foliage is beautiful and the air has a clean chill to it to remind you
that winter is coming. Friday night, the 18th, we have an Open Mic Night
hosted by Bill Everett with no cover. Tunes start at 8 pm and last
through the night. Saturday the 19th we have Behind the Wagon coming up
from San Diego. This is the bands first time playing in Julian. They
have a mix of country sound with a rock attitude, it should be a great
show. Sunday afternoon we’ll be showing the Chargers v. Bears game on
the big screen with the sound on in the saloon at 1:15 pm.

On the beverage side, we still have lots of great treats that we tapped
during San Diego Beer Week. Sierra Nevada’s excellent winter beer,
Celebration, is on tap – it is an amber hued IPA that is very easy to
drink, Lost Abbey Angel’s Share – a 12% Bourbon barrel aged barleywine
(and the beer that was made in the barrels that adorn the bar front),
Stone Double Dry Hopped Ruination IPA – this drinkable double IPA gets
even better with a second dose of hops before kegging and Mission
Brewing Dark Seas Imperial Stout – a massive, yet smooth, 10% alcohol
stout with a pitch black color. And all of our great regular beers are
on tap as well – Mission Hefeweizen, AleSmith Nut Brown, Firestone
Double Barrel, Julian Hard Cider, Eel River Blonde and more – a total of
16 drafts.

We have also been expanding and upgrading our liquor selection. Try
Julian raw cider mixed with spiced rum or cinnamon vodka or Amanda makes
a great Old Fashioned with Jim Beam Rye or Old Overholt Rye whiskey. We
have some new top shelf items including Angostura 7 Year Old Rum, Kelt
Cognac and Knappogue Castle Irish Single Malt Whiskey. We also now carry
Wild Turkey 81, a great Bourbon that mixes perfectly with Coke.

The kitchen has been turning out some amazing food specials. Vince has
been smoking Pork Chops and they are amazing – moist, tender and full of
flavor with apple gravy. Lindsey and Vicki have been busy making Pot
Pies with smoked chicken and even smoked pheasant and wild mushrooms. We
now have soup appearing regularly on the menu for the winter. And my
personal new favorite – the Burnt Ends Beef Brisket Sandwich. It is
smoked brisket that is chopped up and then re-smoked soaked in barbecue
sauce which slightly burns the tips of the meat and reduces the sauce to
thick perfection. Thursday and Monday nights we are running a taco
special with our pulled pork and a creamy avocado sauce. And Vince has
been doing a rotating dessert in addition to our pies. So far he has
done cheesecake and creme brulee, both of which were wonderful.

On the football front, there will now be a Thursday night NFL game every
week. Tomorrow, on the 17th, we’ll have the Jets v. Broncos on at 5:20
pm. The games are on NFL Network, which we get. Sunday night the 20th,
its a big east coast match up – Eagles v. Giants. And the Monday night
game will be Kansas City v. New England. The Chargers play again on the
27th at 1:15 against the Broncos. Make plans to join us on Monday,
December 5th for the Chargers v. Jaguars Monday night game at 5:30.

Next week is Thanksgiving and we will be CLOSED on Thursday and Friday,
the 24th and 25th. The restaurant and saloon will be open normal hours
all day Saturday and Sunday. We have Useless Rhetoric playing on the
night of the 26th at 8 pm. On Saturday, December 3rd, we will have the
All Nighters playing. Looking further ahead, we will have Derailed
playing our New Year’s Eve show on Saturday, December 31st.

Check out our weekly specials – $1 off all draft beer and cocktails all
night Thursday from 5 to 10 pm and $13 pitchers of all draft beers
(except those in a 9 oz pour) on Monday from 4 to 9 pm with discounted
food specials including our great wings and sticks for just $5 – smoked
chicken wings and drumsticks tossed in our spicy house made wing sauce.
The wings are only available on Thursday, Friday and Monday, so get them
while you can.

We’ve got the wood burning stove going in the restaurant and the heater
turned on in the saloon to keep it warm. Our Christmas lights are up to
make it festive. So join us for some great food, beer and music at the
Bailey Barbecue. Check our Facebook page at for more daily updates.

Hello Beer and BBQ Fans,

It is going to be a beautiful weekend in the mountains after a bit of fire and rain. The fire is out and the rain has passed leaving just the sunshine and mountain air. We have a great menu lined up for this weekend including Vince’s Beef Short Ribs and Lindsey’s Chili Pot Pie. The big news from the kitchen is that our baker Vicki Newman took first place in the Julian Women’s Club annual Pie Contest during the Apple Days Festival last weekend. The first place pie was our Annie Bailey’s Apple Pear Crumb Pie which is made with Julian apples and local pears picked at Menghini Winery. Annie Bailey was the wife of town founder Dru Bailey, who is also the namesake for the restaurant. The original Bailey House from 1876 still stands on our property (though with a little lean to it).

This weekend we have a great blues show with The Fremonts. The band has been voted San Diego Blues Band of the Year and has also won San Diego Blues Album of the Year. Show starts at 8 pm in the Saloon. There is a $5 cover, 100% of which goes to the band. Next weekend we have great shows on both Friday and Saturday. Friday the 14th we have High Plains Drifters and Saturday the 15th is Phil Diiorio and the Knife Edge. At the end of the month, we will be doing a Halloween costume party (with prizes) on Saturday the 29th with live music from Hickory Wind. Make plans to stop by on Monday the 31st for a special Halloween night with the Chargers v. Chiefs on Monday Night Football.

On the beer front, the tap list is looking great. Right now we have Blind Pig, Racer 5, High Tide, Alpine Ugly and Sculpin for IPAs along with Mongo IPA for a double IPA. We now have Eel River Organic Blond Ale on tap. And we have lots of great full time beers on tap – AleSmith Nut Brown, Firestone Double Barrel Ale, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Mission Hefeweizen, New Belgium Blue Paddle Pilsner and Julian Hard Cider (which makes a great mimosa on the weekends).

We’ll be doing a few small events during San Diego Beer Week, November 4th through 13th. We have kegs of Lost Abbey Angels Share Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine, Green Flash 9th Anniversary Triple IPA and Mission Dreadnaught Imperial Stout lined up already with a few more kegs yet to come. I should have some updates on the brewery in the next email. Equipment is on order and we should be brewing by sometime in November. I have arranged to brew with some locally grown hops from Star B Ranch in Santa Ysabel.

We will be opening early on Sunday, October 23rd for the Chargers v. Jets game at 10 am. Vince and Lindsey will be cooking up some brunch food and we’ll have mimosas and bloody marys from the bar. The Chargers play the Broncos at 1:15 pm this Saturday, the 9th and then have a bye week on the 16th. We’ll also be showing the USA v. Honduras soccer match at 3 pm on Saturday the 8th. Come watch the games with us on our 51 inch high def TV.

We are now open for lunch every Friday at 11:30 am and we stay open until 11 pm. Our kitchen is open until 8 pm every Thursday through Monday night. We open at 5 pm on Thursdays and feature $1 off any draft beer, cocktail, shot or non-house wine. We open at 11:30 am on the weekends and at 4 pm on Monday with our great $13 pitcher special. You can get a $13 pitcher of any beer we have on tap all night long. And we have some great discounted food specials on Monday night including our Wings and Sticks – smoked chicken wings and drumsticks tossed in our spicy house made wing sauce. You can also phone in your order for pick up.

If you are in need of a place to stay in town, you can find listings at: http://www.julianca.com/ – just click on lodging. If you are a AAA member, most places have discounted rates. If you have a furry family member that will be coming with you, the Julian Lodge is pet friendly – mention that you are coming up to go to Bailey BBQ. Remember that we will also send out monthly music updates on our live music shows from Bill Everett at everett@esrc.org (look for an updated schedule towards the end of the month), so make sure his email makes it to your in box.

I will be posting updates on our Facebook page as well – www.facebook.com/baileybbq, make sure to Like us. We are still working on our website at www.baileybbq.com, adding new content and new pages, so keep checking back. Thanks for all of the support during our opening – Lindsey, Vince and I really appreciate it. We’ll see you soon for some great BBQ food.

Cheers,
Tom
